Falls are one of the largest public health problems among elderly people due to the high morbidity and mortality. Falls cost the NHS 2.3billion annually. The main reasons for falls in this population are multi-factorial - a fall is the result of the interplay of multiple risk factors such as having a history of falls, muscle weakness, poor balance, visual impairment, slower reaction time, polypharmacy and the use of certain medicines as well as environmental hazards.

Services
Hydrotherapy or Aquatic Physiotherapy is physiotherapy practised in warm water and can help relieve aches and pains, mobilise stiff joints and strengthen weak muscles.
The water in the pool is approximately 34C, allowing your muscles to relax and easing the pain in your joints.
The buoyancy of the water unloads the weight of the body, reducing stress on joints and allowing freedom of movement.
Hydrotherapy / Aquatic Physiotherapy can accelerate healing and provides a general sense of well-being.

The properties of the water support the body or limb and enable you to move it with less effort than on land - this is particularly important if you are injured.
The temperature of the water (approx 35 degrees centigrade) helps to reduce pain and aid relaxation of the muscles surrounding the affected areas.
Your blood warms from the temperature of the water and when this reaches your muscles it causes their temperature to rise.
When muscles are warm they contract more easily and efficiently.
This in turn means you can build up the strength and endurance of your muscles without them getting so fatigued.
