Dear Fiona, I have to write and thank you, so much, for your invaluable help towards the end of last year with my acutely painful knee.
It was frightening not to be able to walk and you were the most gentle, patient and instructive helper I could hope for.
You inspired and encouraged and reassured me and that gave me the courage to do the exercises and help myself, believing that I could get better.
Now I am going for walks every day and I am starting to feel I may be able to walk without the stick soon.
Osteoarthritis is degeneration of joint cartilage and the underlying bone, most common from middle age onward.
It causes pain and stiffness, especially in the hip, knee, and thumb joints.
The words osteoarthritis, degeneration, disease, degenerative disc disease etc. are emotive, conjuring up a picture of life with constant pain, joint stiffness, deformity and potential disability.
Most people are able to live perfectly normal active lives despite a diagnosis of osteoarthritis.
As we grow older our skin becomes wrinkly, or our hair goes grey, so 'age related wear and tear' puts the condition in perspective.
